What is a devotional journal?

A devotional journal is a notebook, printed page or app you use during your daily devotions. Devotions, or quiet time, means a few minutes set apart to read the Bible, think about it and pray. The journal is where you capture what happened in that time.

It is a little different from other faith journals:

Main focusTypical page
Devotional journalYour daily quiet timeReading, key line, application, prayer
Prayer journalTalking to GodThanks, requests, answered prayers
Bible journalStudying ScriptureNotes, questions, cross references, art
Faith journalYour walk with God over timeStories, lessons, doubts, milestones

Many people blend all four. That is fine. The template on this page covers the most common daily pattern.

Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.
Psalm 119:105 KJV

What to write in a devotional journal

You do not need to write a lot. Most good devotional entries answer the same few questions:

  1. What did I read? The reference, or the title of the devotional and its verse.
  2. What stood out? One phrase or idea. Copy it word for word if it is short.
  3. What does it show me about God? His character, His promises, how He treats people.
  4. What does it ask of me? Something to believe, stop, start or remember.
  5. What do I want to say to God? A short prayer in your own words.
  6. What am I thankful for? One to three things from yesterday or today.

On busy days, write just the reference and one sentence. On slow days, write more. For a fuller method with headings, see the SOAP method in how to journal the Bible.

But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.
James 1:22 KJV

Devotional journal example

Devotional journalWednesday, October 8
Mark 4:35-41
Stood out: Jesus asking them why they were so afraid. About God: Jesus is in the boat, and He is not panicking. For me: I keep acting like I am alone in my stress at work. Today I will pause before reacting and pray one line. Lord, remind me You are with me when it gets loud. Grateful: my coffee, a calm drive, my sister's text.

Tips to keep a daily devotional journal

  • Same time, same place. Morning works for many people, but bedtime is fine too.
  • Keep your Bible, pen and journal together so there is nothing to find.
  • Aim for five minutes. You can always stay longer.
  • Write the date on every page. Dates make your growth easy to see.
  • Do not compare your journal to anyone else's. Simple is beautiful.
  • Read last month's pages on the first of each month.

Questions people ask

What is a devotional journal?

A devotional journal is a notebook or page you use during your daily quiet time with God. You write what you read in the Bible or a devotional book, what stood out, what it means for your life, and a short prayer. Over time it becomes a record of how God has spoken to you.

What should I write in my devotional journal?

Write the passage you read, one line that stood out, what it shows you about God, how it applies to you today, and a short prayer. Add a few things you are thankful for. Even one or two sentences counts. The goal is to listen and respond, not to write a lot.

How is a devotional journal different from a prayer journal?

A devotional journal centers on what you read and learn during quiet time. A prayer journal centers on what you say to God, like thanks, requests and answered prayers. Many people combine them by reading first and then praying on the same page.

Do I need a devotional book to keep a devotional journal?

No. You can use only the Bible. Read a psalm or a chapter of a gospel each day and use the template above. A devotional book can help if you like a short reading and a thought to start with, but it is optional.

Is this devotional journal template free to print?

Yes. Fill it in or leave it blank, then press Print and choose your printer or Save as PDF. There is no sign up. Your answers save in your browser on this device only.
