What is in this free journal template

The page follows the shape of a day: how you start, what you plan, what happens, and what you take with you. Each box has one job.

  • Today I feel. One word and a reason. Naming a feeling is often the first step to handling it.
  • My top 3 for today. Three priorities, not a full to do list. If you only did these, the day would be a good one.
  • What happened today. The main events, like a short diary entry.
  • I am grateful for. Two or three things. Specific beats general: "my sister picked up the kids" instead of "family".
  • What I learned. One lesson, small or big.
  • Tomorrow I want to. One thing to carry into the next day, so each page connects to the next.

Here is how one day might look. Short answers are fine.

My daily journal
Today I feel: hopeful. The sun is finally out. Top 3: finish the report, call the bank, walk at lunch. What happened: report done by 2pm. Bank call took 40 minutes. Grateful for: Mia's text, warm coffee, a seat on the train. Learned: I work better with my phone in another room. Tomorrow: start the day with the hardest task.

Journal template PDF, Word and Google Docs

There is no file to download. The page itself is the template.

  • PDF. Press Print or save as PDF, then pick Save as PDF as the printer. You can save it blank or filled in.
  • Word. Open a new document and type the six headings from this page, with a few empty lines under each. Save it as your own template.
  • Google Docs. Do the same in a new Google Doc. Make a copy of the doc each day, or add a new date heading at the top each morning.

A paper copy works well too. Print a stack of blank pages and keep them in a binder or clipboard by your bed.

Tips for using a journal template every day

  • Leave a box empty if you have nothing for it. The template is a guide, not a test.
  • Keep answers short. Two lines in each box is plenty.
  • Read back your pages at the end of the month. The "What I learned" lines are often the most useful.
  • If a box never feels right, change it. Swap "What I learned" for "A funny moment" if that suits you better.
  • Running out of things to write? Try our journal prompts or journal page ideas.
