Prayer journal for teens: 78 honest prompts

A prayer journal for teens is a private place to talk to God about real life: friends, school, family, your future, and the stuff you do not say out loud. Below are 78 prompts sorted by area of life, plus a page where you can write right now. Everything you type stays on this device.

How to use a prayer journal as a teen

Prayer does not need fancy words. God wants the real you, including the doubts, the bad days and the questions. Writing helps you slow down and actually say what you mean.

  • Pick one prompt. Tap Write and it lands on your page above.
  • Write like you text a close friend. Short, honest, no filters.
  • Add a verse when you can. Read a few verses first, even just one psalm.
  • Keep track of answers. When something changes, go back and write what happened.
  • It is private. Your page saves on this device only. No account, no one else sees it.
Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.
1 Timothy 4:12 KJV

Tips for keeping your prayer journal going

  • Same time, same place. Right before bed or right after school works for a lot of teens.
  • Set a small goal. Three sentences a day is a win.
  • Do not wait to feel spiritual. Write anyway. Feelings often follow.
  • Read old pages once a month. You will be surprised how much has changed.
  • Try different formats. A prayer journal template with boxes, or a free letter to God. See more prayer journal ideas.

Questions people ask

How do teens start a prayer journal?

Grab a notebook or use the page above. Write the date, read a short Bible passage, and then write to God like you would text a close friend. Pick one prompt if you are stuck. Keep it short and try to write at the same time each day, like before bed.

What should a teenager write in a prayer journal?

Anything real. Thanks for good things, stress about school, problems with friends or family, questions about faith, things you are sorry for, and prayers for other people. God wants your honest words, not perfect ones.

Is it okay to write my doubts in a prayer journal?

Yes. Many of the psalms are full of honest questions and complaints to God. Writing doubts down is a way to bring them to God instead of hiding them. It can also help to talk them over with a youth leader or pastor you trust.

Will anyone see what I write on this page?

No. Your writing is saved in the browser on this device only. It is not sent to us and there is no account. If others use the same device, they could open the page, so you may want to clear it or print it when you are done.

Is there a prayer journal just for teen girls?

This page has a section of prompts written for teen girls, covering body image, friendships, jealousy, boundaries and dreams. Any notebook can become a prayer journal for teen girls, and you can use these prompts with it.
