Tips for parents

  • Keep it short. Five minutes at bedtime is plenty for young kids.
  • Let them draw. Kids under seven can draw their prayer and tell you what it means. You can write a caption.
  • Pray alongside them. Keep your own journal next to theirs. Kids copy what they see.
  • Never grade it. Spelling and neat writing do not matter here. Honesty does.
  • Celebrate answers. Add a star or sticker when God answers a prayer, and talk about it together.
  • Respect privacy. Ask before reading your child's journal, especially as they get older.
  • Print a few pages. Use Print to make paper pages for a binder or a road trip.

Older kids may be ready for the prayer journal for teens. Parents who want to pray for their children can use the prayer journal for your children. For a general diary, see our diary for kids and journal prompts for kids.

Questions people ask

What age can a child start a prayer journal?

Children can start as soon as they can talk about their day, around age four or five, with a parent writing for them or drawing pictures together. By seven or eight, most kids can write a few sentences on their own. The prompts on this page work best for ages five to twelve.

What should kids write in a prayer journal?

Kids can write thank yous, things that make them sad or scared, people they want to pray for, and things they are sorry for. They can also write about a Bible story or verse. Drawing a picture of the prayer is also a great choice for younger kids.

How do I teach my child to pray in a journal?

Show them first. Write a short prayer in your own journal while they watch. Then give them one simple prompt, like thank You God for, and let them finish it. Keep it short, praise their effort, and make it part of a daily routine like bedtime.

Is this prayer journal for kids safe to use online?

Yes. There are no ads, no sign up and no account. What your child writes is saved in the browser on this device only and is not sent to us. A parent can print or save the page as a PDF to keep it.

Should I read my child's prayer journal?

With young children, it is natural to read it together. As they grow, ask before you read. Kids pray more honestly when they know their journal is respected. Let them choose what to share with you.
