Why keep a prayer journal for your children

You cannot be with your children every minute, but God can. A prayer journal for your children helps you bring each child to Him by name, with real needs, instead of a rushed bless the kids at bedtime.

  • It keeps prayers specific. Each child gets their own page and their own needs.
  • It calms your worry. Writing a fear down and handing it to God is better than carrying it all day.
  • It shows you God's faithfulness. Years later you will see answers you had forgotten.
  • It can become a legacy. Many parents give these pages to a grown child on a graduation or wedding day.
I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth.
3 John 1:4 KJV

Tips for praying for your kids

  • Pray with them, not just for them. Let them hear you pray their name.
  • Ask them how to pray. At bedtime, ask: what can I pray for you tomorrow?
  • Keep pages in a binder. One tab per child, with answers at the back.
  • Do not give up on prodigals. Some prayers take years. Keep writing and keep dating them.
  • Pray with your spouse or a friend. Swap pages once a month and pray for each other's children.

Questions people ask

How do I pray for my children daily?

Pick one area of life each day, such as their faith, character, friends, school, health or future. Pray a verse over them with their name in it, and add one or two specific needs from this week. Writing it down in a prayer journal helps you stay consistent and see answers over time.

What Bible verses can I pray over my children?

Good choices include Psalm 139:13-14, Isaiah 54:13, Joshua 1:9, Proverbs 3:5-6, Psalm 121:7-8, Luke 2:52, Philippians 1:9-11 and 3 John 1:4. Put your child's name into the verse as you pray it and write the reference at the top of their page.

Should I keep a separate prayer journal for each child?

Many parents do, because it keeps each child's prayers and answers together. Others use one notebook with a tab for each child. Either works. The page on this site can be printed once per child and kept in a binder.

When should I give my child their prayer journal?

Some parents give it at a milestone like graduation, a wedding, or the birth of a grandchild. Others share small pieces along the way. Reading years of a parent's prayers can be a powerful gift and a reminder that God was always at work.

What if I do not see answers to my prayers for my children?

Keep praying and keep writing. Some answers come quickly and others take years. Some prayers are answered in ways you did not expect. Dating your entries helps you notice small answers you might miss, and it keeps your hope steady while you wait.
